We had a very busy week last week. We completed the DRA and all 3 STAR assessments.  We even managed to squeezed in the Unit 1 math test and the Unit 1 Fundations test.  Phew!
This week in reading, we will concetnrate on Comprehension and Fluency strategies. We will also be dedicating our math block to practicing strategies for learning our math facts. One of our second grade goals is to have all of our facts with sums up to 20  fluent by the end of the year.
We will also be exploring the properties of rocks and learning about the rock cycle, as we continue the science unit Pebble, Sand and Silt. Then we will also starting the social studies unit that introduces Map Skills. Next we will move into exploring North America and The United Stated, highlighting American symbols. These units are lots of fun and very interesting for the kids.

NOTE:  Mrs. Johnston, the art teacher, is in need of volunteers to mat and hang artwork. If you are interested please contact Mrs. Johnston at mjjohnston@capeelizabethschools.org.

We have been working hard getting ready for Open House!!! We hope that you can come!  We have so much to show you!
We have been working hard all week. In math we are reviewing counting and number sense strategies by playing games on our number grids and counting by 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. We are also reviewing counting coins and adding up different amounts of money.
In Readers’ Workshop, we are learning the goals we need to achieve in order to become  better readers. In phonics, we are reviewing vowel sounds, digraph sounds, and our high frequency words.
We are writing personal narratives in Writer’s Workshop. It takes a lot of time and practice to write stories that have all the story elements and descriptive details.
We have also continued to work on building our classroom community where we feel safe and happy. A place where it is ok to take risks and make mistakes.
We hope you enjoy seeing all of our work and have fun on Monday at Open House!!!
If you have any questions or concerns about anything, please don’t hesitate to email me at mharrington@capeelizabethschools.org or call me on my cell # 939-4880 or school voicemail at 799-7339.

                        Have a great weekend!!

We are on our way….

Wow!  What a great start to our year! After only the third day it felt like we have been together for months. We are going to have a great year!!!!

Our first two weeks have been the usual review of school routines, protocols and procedures, which can be a bit boring, but the kids have been patient and working hard to learn them quickly. As a class we are also focusing on making friendships and building a nurturing community.

We have established only two rules in our classroom: 1. We are here to learn and 2. We are here to help others learn. Every other rule that exists in a class fits into those two rules. We have had wonderfully rich discussions about how to behave in order to follow  these two rules.

In the first few weeks of school, my goal is to assess my students in all academic areas to determine where each child is and what each child needs  in order to succeed to their fullest potential.
I also feel it is equally important to get to know each child’s personality, strengths and weaknesses, likes and dislikes and learning styles so that each of my students can be fully engaged, enjoy learning and hopefully find school fun (at least some of the time).

So as you can see, we have been very busy these first two weeks of school. For some children, it takes time for them to readjust to the schedule and to feel comfortable in a new classroom. If your child is coming home exhausted at the end of the day, now you know why. If you have want to chat or have any questions or concerns about your child or this school year, I am happy to meet with you at any time.

If you have any questions or concerns about jury duty or anything else, please don’t hesitate to email me at mharrington@capeelizabethschools.org or call me on my cell # 939-4880 or school voicemail at 799-7339.

Have a great weekend!!!
